What is this profession?
We are professionals that can see patients, formulate a differential diagnosis, treat, and in many countries prescribe medicine. We can assist in surgeries and in some countries are allowed to perform surgeries. In many countries, we work with a supervising physician; however, this is not the case in many countries.
What is our profession currently classified under in the ILSO?
At the present moment, the professions are listed under paramedicine. With the next update of the ILSO, the IPAO helps to shape recommendations for this classification.
Is our Education the Same?
Our education and curriculum are not the same; however, we are in the process of utilizing LOOOP to have objective data to map out our curriculums and competencies/EPAs.
Are Our Professions Regulated?
Many of our professions have regulatory boards; however, in some country professions are regulated by government agencies. For more information please visit.
Can I work in Another Country?
Unfortunately, the profession at the current moment does not have reciprocity. For example, any PAs wishing to practice in the USA, the licensing boards require you to graduate from an US accredited program. With mapping of curriculums this may change in the future with the help of organizations such as ECFMG.
